The storage situation on the Wii is sorta abysmal, especially if you’re an avid Virtual Console or WiiWare fan and have lots of games. Don’t worry, Nintendo knows it. According to a translated interview with Latin American pub Club Nintendo, Reggie and Miyamoto say that you can expect an announcement about storage goodness in the future, since they’re working on a number of technologies, but it won’t be a hard drive.
Nope, Reggie says it’s even better than a hard drive. Could it be online storage? (That’s the only thing we can think of besides a hard drive, since online storage is actually super cheap nowadays.) Whatever it is, if it involves hardware, expect it to be one of the few Wii peripherals Nintendo makes, since Miyamoto says they have enough already. Amen to that. [Go Nintendo via CVG via Kotaku]

Kotaku is claiming that Nintendo will debut a new Nintendo DS in April or May of 2009. According to their sources, the new DS model’s features will be similar to the next-generation DS wishlist we published last year.
Kotaku says that both screens would have touch capability, which is reasonable to expect. They also point out that both screens will have a wide aspect ratio, which it’s more difficult to believe unless they position the controls somewhere else (I don’t see Nintendo sacrificing physical buttons for a pure touch interface.)
They also claim that this may not be the Nintendo DS 2, but a revision to the current model. Personally, I don’t know how can that be. With such new prominent features, which will require a new generation of games to be fully exploited, it won’t make sense to not name label it as the next generation DS.
In any case, they seem very confident about the news. So much in fact, that they used our Nintendo DS 2 3D mock-up to further highlight their scoop.

Every hardware needs some revolutionary features. This time around, it happened to be we had a revolutionary user interface. Will it be the same for the next generation? I really can’t tell. It’s natural for the current customer to expect Nintendo is going to once again do something different. If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it’s going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again.
So there you have it: no brain interfaces, no holodecks, no Matrix. But as Microsoft and Sony’s game divisions keep bleeding money, I’m sure Iwata is not giving a damn about the future, four or six years from now, when new generation consoles are expected to hit the market. [Kotaku and Forbes]

These are the current software profits for Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony based on first-party game titles published under their banner. It’s much like the hardware situation, with Nintendo up front with an uncountable amount of money, Microsoft somewhere in the middle with a deficit, and Sony pulling up the rear with billions in the red. So not only is Nintendo turning a profit from each Wii sale, it’s also generating loads with their games as well. We hope Ninty’s taking all this cash and coming up with a next-next-gen system with both unique motion-sensing gameplay AND good graphical capabilities—not to make Wii Sports P.E. Fun Times, but something good that we would want to play. [EDGE via Kotaku via Boing Boing Gadgets]
Have you heard about rumor that Wii’s in brand new colors will be entering the Japanese market in 2008? You have? Well, it’s fake.
According to Kotaku.com and their oringal rumor:
“According to a rumor allegedly sourced from the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu magazine, Nintendo plans to introduce new Wii colors to coincide with the Japanese release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. According to supposed early leaks from the magazine,
The idea of a SSBB Wii bundle pack isn’t farfetched at all, but what kind of colors are those? I’ll stick with my snow yellow Wii, thank you.
Well, as it turns out, the source of the rumors above had been proven false and is pure worthless trash fabricated by some desperate ADD Nintendo fan boy.
I am just relived that I won’t have to tell my mom that I’ll be playing with my diamond black Wii in my room any time soon.
